Snow in July! Yep, it’s the beautiful Glacier National Park! Before you take the journey down the Going To The Sun Road, stop by some soak in the magnificent views of rivers and lakes. A “don’t miss” point of interest in West Glacier, is Lake McDonald. You really need to get out and walk the shoreline of this beautiful lake. We had so much fun trying to find as many different colored rocks as possible. The rocks have a smooth texture with the most fascinating colors; almost looks like small Easter eggs. The beautiful, clear rivers are just as breathtaking as well.
Going To The Sun Road
If you have a hard time with heights, stick to hanging out at the lakes and rivers in Glacier. If you are good with heights, Going To The Sun Road is an adventure in itself. On this road, you will want to park your RV. It is very narrow at times and only a small stone wall guides you around the edge of the mountain (as you can see the pictures below). The scenery is breathtaking all throughout the drive. Take your time and stop at the scenic pull offs and take in the beauty God created. Breathe!
When driving the Going To The Sun Road, make sure you do this with plenty of daylight. By the time we got to the east side of Glacier, it was getting late and I didn’t want to chance being stuck on the top of the mountain in the dark. We chose to go around the outside edge of the park instead. That was a whole other adventure in itself.
Ever have a snowball fight in July? Well, we did! Living in the south, we don’t get much snow in the winter, so to see snow in the summer is even better. There was a cool rock tunnel you had to travel through and small waterfalls coming from the melting snow above.
Logan Pass
Another point of interest is Logan Pass. It is where the Continental Divide and a very modern observation/gift shop/rest area is as well. If you have pets, they ask that you do not bring them on the walking trails in this area. Helpful hint: be careful around the vegetation in this area, we witnessed several people brush up along a plant that has fine hairs that gets into your skin and causes great irritation and a rash. If you don’t know what it is, don’t touch it. As you can see in the picture below, we found a few souvenirs in the gift shop here.
